St. John’s Wort is best known for its nervine and antiviral effects, supporting mood balance, nerve-related pain, and immune health. It is valued both internally and topically for its antibacterial, antiviral, and pain-relieving properties.

Benefits & Uses

  • Mood & mental health: Traditionally used for mild to moderate depression, seasonal affective disorder, anxiety, OCD, and addiction recovery; often paired with lemon balm.

  • Nervine & pain relief: Helpful for nerve pain (sciatica, carpal tunnel), interstitial cystitis, and stress-related disorders.

  • Skin & wound care: Infused oil or tincture used topically for burns, irritated skin, and nerve pain.

  • Antiviral & antibacterial: Effective against gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, MRSA) and retroviruses (HIV, FIV); supports recovery from influenza and hepatitis C.

  • Respiratory support: Works as an expectorant and mild antispasmodic for irritated lungs and coughs.

Form & Dosage

  • Tincture: ¼–1 tsp, 2–3 times daily.

  • Powder: 1–2 tsp, 2–3 times daily.

  • Infused oil: Applied topically for burns, nerve pain, and skin irritation.

  • Tea: Less common, but can be made from flowering tops.

Precautions

  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Considered safe in pregnancy; safety during lactation is unknown.

  • Photosensitivity: May increase sensitivity to sunlight; wear protective clothing when using high doses.

  • Mental Health Caution: Avoid in individuals with psychosis, schizophrenia, or those taking antipsychotic medications.
